Are you thinking about choosing stainless steel straps over other types? Do you already know enough about it? For you to see, here is what you need to know about stainless steel strap types.
First off, it is important to know that not all stainless steel is created equal. In fact, there are three different types of stainless steel that are commonly used in straps, and each has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. Second of all the structure of the steel. This is important to consider as it will affect how strong and durable the strap is. Finally, you should also think about the finish of the strap. This is what will determine how it looks and how well it holds up over time.
if you also believe that your watch somewhat defines your personality, you can use it to show people what you want to project. However, it is strap plays an important role in its appearance as well as in your comfort. Thus, choosing the right one may not be simple.
Nevertheless, this article will make things easier for you.
Grades Of Stainless Steel Straps/ Materials of Stainless Steel Straps?
Let us start right away. One aspect of stainless steel straps and their type is their grade. While all stainless steel straps are manufactured with quality, each grade level may vary in terms of metal components. Based on industry standards, the following grades of stainless steel straps are widely used.
- Grade 1: 904L. It is austenitic stainless steel. Often, it is also called high alloy stainless steel. Its most popular strength is its resistance to acids. The first watch and straps made from 904L grade steel were in 1985.
- Grade 2: 316L. 316 stainless steel is 304 stainless steel in the resistance to pitting corrosion on the stainless steel produced by adding some more molybdenum. In various types of water (distilled water, drinking water, river water, boiler water, etc.), 304 stainless steel and 316 stainless steel have almost the same corrosion resistance, but when the medium has a very high content of chloride ions, 316 stainless steel is more suitable
- Grade 3: sus314. This is good for resisting high temperatures. Aside from that, it also features oxidation and carburization resistance. However, having this grade of stainless steel still has a certain limit. It may become brittle when you expose it to 649-816°C (1200- 1500°F) temperatures for a prolonged period.
- Grade 4: sus304. This is the most commonly used stainless steel, especially when based on Japanese JIS standards. The majority of its components consist of 18% Cr and 8% Ni. It comes with good resistance to both extremes of temperature. That means it can withstand heat and coldness. Plus, it is also corrosion resistant.
What’s the Structure of the Stainless Steel Band?
The stainless steel watch band is made up of these parts: Head Link, Band Link., Buckle, Connection Pin or Screw, and Spring bar.
Head Links, End Links & Band Links
The head link is the first link of the band that connects the watch case to the watch band. That’s why we call it the head link, except for the part of the head link, the rest we call the bank link, of course, the head link is also part of the band link.
above picture is the head link
The side small part band links, We named side links.
The middle part, We call the middle links.
Opposite the other side of the head link, It is the end links.
Watch Buckle
The watch buckle is the clasp to connect the 2 pcs of band
Connection Pin or Screw
Connection pin was used to connect each band link. some higher grade watches use the screw to connect each link, and some are just pins.
Spring bar
Spring bar is a small piece of the bar(like the above picture shows), Which was used to connect the case and band. It has quick release spring bar and a normal spring bar
Sizes And Thickness of The Stainless Steel Bands
The sizes of stainless steel bands are:
- 16mm
- 18mm
- 19mm
- 20mm
- 22mm
- 24mm
Thickness normally is 3-4m
Types of Stainless Steel Straps
Although all stainless steel straps share common material, they can still be classified into several types. The common ones are solid stainless steel, folded stainless steel, and stainless-steel semi-solid.
Solid stainless steel strap
Solid stainless steel straps feature a lot of sturdiness and strength. Its inner part is much more solid than other types. Under this are two general classifications: side-wrapped stainless steel and no side-wrapped stainless steel bands. Its difference is that a solid stainless steel strap’s side may either be wrapped or not.
Folded stainless steel strap
Unlike other stainless steel straps, folded stainless steel bands are much easier to deal with. It is more lightweight and is more suitable for lightweight accessories.
The folded strap is easily identify, there will has the folded line when you see the side of the straps
Stainless Steel Semi-Solid Band
We can describe the stainless steel semi-solid band as somewhat a combination of the other stainless steel types mentioned above. Likewise, it is middle part solid – like a solid stainless-steel strap. On the other hand, its sides are like the ones found in folded stainless steel straps.
But this kind of strap is less.
All of the above designs are manufactured by customers’ requirement.
What should you care about when choosing the stainless steel straps?
When choosing a stainless steel strap, there are some things you might consider. Likewise, you should care about the head link types, buckle types and the stainless steel band types
The Buckle Types
A buckle is a part of a watch that connects the ends of the strap so that it will not loose from your hands. Therefore, it plays a significant role in your strap and your entire watch. There are various types of buckles available. Each comes with its unique features.
For designs, the most popular buckle is a solid butterfly buckle. However, you can also choose jewelry buckles. Meanwhile, everyone must also be aware that some of those come with a safety clasp, yet some do not.
As for features, this may depend on your convenience. For instance, some buckles come with a button, and some do not. The button may offer easy use for the watch owner, especially when the person frequently takes it off and puts it back on.
The Stainless Steel Band Types
What i said is this typles.
Stainless steel types are shown like above, All the stainless steel was cut into small piece then connected the small piece together.
As of this kind artwork, The band can designed to different shapes.
The Head Link Styles
The buckle is not the only most crucial part of the strap. We also have the head link, which can be considered the strap’s primary component. It creates a connection between the watch’s strap and the case. This part is available in the following types:
- 90 Degree fall strap
- Half fall straps
- Full fall strap
How Does a Stainless-Steel Strap was Manufactured?
Like other straps, stainless steel must also be manufactured with quality despite the material’s natural durability. Most manufacturers permit watch suppliers and even consumers to choose their designs. It means that all in all, they are open for customized watches. So, what is their process for manufacturing stainless steel straps?
Step 1: Make Design drawing.
Firstly, our engineer will make a watch drawing, and share it with the stainless steel strap supplier.
Both confirmed with no problem, the supplier will make 3D drawings (with the case and buckle effect), and confirm to us, if it ok.
then make a CAD with the structure of the data map, we confirm, Then start producing
Step 2: Cutting stainless steel strip material
The manufacturer starts working with the materials, such as cutting the stainless steel into a piece.
This strap in the above picture, except head link, end links and middle links of the head link is special, need to start another mold, the rest of the strap are strip material (the same shape, only the thickness is different), the strap factory according to the shape of the strap drawings to purchase strip material, after the arrival of the strip material, supplier will fiirst test grinding polishing process to test the quality, to see if it is up to standard (polishing check for pockmarks)
After the quality checked, the factory workers cut the strip material according to the number of customer orders, then drilling ( the more specifications of different band links, the more process you need to do).
Step 3: CNC drill the hole.
CNC drilling is done to make round holes for assembly purposes. After the CNC process, we need to clean the links by machine.
Step 4: Sanding and Polishing.
Manufacturers start sanding or making polish for sharp areas or corners. This makes the piece or the stainless straps smooth and shiny. This also helps the straps be professional-looking and ready for branding.
According to different strap style, The polishing process will be a little different, high-grade strap are polished one by one, after polished in the corresponding position and then do spray oil protection, and then other processes.
for example, the above 3 links style strap, the polish proces is a slight difference;
let me focus on the details of this polished.
the strip parts are only polished on the inner and outer sides of the links and beveled area and then fitted with pins.
A connection pin is a double-headed flower branch with fine teeth at both ends, used to fix the strap.
the formal manufacturers will do the corresponding tension torque tension and other tests, the strap two sections to the outside pull, pull the force can not be less than 15 kg, the quality of the good or bad will determine the practical life of the watch band, such as with a long time there is loose or even loosened that the quality is not good, this pin used to fix is not disassembled.
The above 3 links style, is assembled directly with the gray wheel to open the rough, and then further polished in the sisal wheel and finally in the wing wheel sanding. The assembled band first grinding side, and then clamped with the corresponding clamps on the front overall light machine open rough, and then further polished with a sisal wheel and finally in the wing wheel sanding.
You can make a polishing tool, the curvature of the tool front is the same as the polished curvature, and you can save more time. The ground band body is cleaned with a professional cleaning solution in an ultrasonic machine.
Step 5: QC (Quality Control).
The ground strap and accessories will be passed to the QC for inspection, here is mainly to check whether the grinding process is in place, staff check according to the quality requirements, not up to standard with a red pen mark for rework
In this step, the manufacturer should ensure that there is no scratch found. Its measurement should also be the same as the requested size.
Step 6: Painting.
Let us say that the stainless steel strap is good to go, already passed the quality control. The manufacturer can then start the painting process. Paingting colors, mark the logo of your brand or the names you want to put on there.
Then QC check.
Step 7: Package.
Packaging is the last step of the manufacturing process. After grinding department’s QC checked the straps, next is the packaging process, the staff will assemble the strap with the latter sections of the strap by the connection pin, at this step, the QC are checking the matches between the pin and band links, (the packaging department also has a corresponding QC, to check the quality of accessories purchased from the outside is up to standard).
the head links will be packed separately, and straps and buckles are installed and packaged separately too.
This is the full process from the beginning of end, I did not mentioned much more details and a lot of attention, such as different styles of straps with different grinding wheels, with different wax, different materials polishing methods are different, etc.
Artwork of Stainless-Steel Straps Brushes
If you need an idea of how far stainless steel straps can be customized, you can consider the following options.
- Satin
- Sand Blasting (in different colors)
- All-Glossy(mirror finishing)
- Mixed above 3 brushes (2 side stain, middle piece glossy, or Middle stain, Side is glossy)
- Tow-Tone(mixed with gold color)
Why do you Choose Stainless Steel Straps?
Straps can be made from varying materials. Yet, why do most people choose one made from stainless steel? Here are the reasons.
- Solid and Durable. We cannot question the solidity or strength of stainless steel. While it is true that there are various grades, stainless material is durable enough that it lasts for many years. Therefore, you do not have to worry too much about having upkeep or replacement services.
- More waterproof. Compared to leather straps, stainless steel ones are less prone to get weakened by water.
- Anti-corrosion. Who wants a strap that can get easily corrode? Unlike other steels and metals, stainless steels resist moisture and rust. Related to anti-corrosion is its resistance to a high-humidity environment. It can also last even if you cannot avoid exposing it to high-temperature places.
- Anti-Oxidation. Stainless steels contain a minimum chromium content. Such a compound positively reacts with the oxygen, creating a protective layer for steel. Such a reaction leads to oxidation resistance. Thus, it does not easily turn black.
- Non-harmful. Unlike other materials, stainless steel cannot cause skin allergies. This remains true even if one’s skin is sensitive to chemicals.
- Good-looking. Since stainless steel is resistant to water, corrosion, and extreme temperature, it is no wonder how it can become good-looking. What is more interesting is that its looks could last longer, along with its durability. Moreover, it also wins the attraction of many, being one of the most luxurious-looking styles.
How to Care for Your Stainless Steel Straps?
While stainless straps are durable by nature, it does not indicate that you shall not take care of them. Indeed, proper care can make it even more durable.
Remember, stainless steel straps also have their weaknesses. For example, it can be tarnished by saltwater, sweat, dirt, and makeup. So, to maintain its beauty, you must give it special care.
Cleaning A Stainless Steel Straps
When you think you need to clean it, here is what you can do.
Step 1: Pick a soft cloth and wipe it down. Make sure that the cloth you will be using is clean and free from harmful chemicals. The goal is to remove initial layers of dust and dirt. If lacking materials, you can use a paper towel. However, please use chamois cloth or microfiber.
Step 2: Dib it using soapy, lukewarm water. Remember never to use hot or steaming water. Fluctuations of temperature affect gaskets. Specifically, it will either expand or contract. Once this happens, water will be able to penetrate the watch unless you remove it from the watch. To proceed, however, you can prepare a clean bowl or sink basin filled with lukewarm water. Through a short soak and gentle wiping using a soft cloth, you will be able to remove most grimes. You can also add a drop of antibacterial dish soap.
Step 3: gently rub the stainless steel strap using a damp, clean toothbrush. The goal is to reach its crevices. Be aware of a heavy mind. Too much pressure being applied may result in unwanted scratches.
Step 4: Rinse it with warm water. You must dip the stainless strap in warm water to rinse or remove the soap from it. Soap residue may cause tarnishing of the steel, turning it look dull.
Step 5: Dry it with a soft cloth. You can use a bath towel for this. Alternatively, you can also grab your hair dryer. However, ensure it is set in low heat to avoid extremely high temperatures.
Step 6: Add some sparkle and shine. This is optional, but this will help maintain its good-looking appearance. So, you can grab a soft cloth and spray some glass cleaner on it. Then, you can use that to wipe down the strap. Feel free to do it for people who are comfortable taking it from the watch. Then, you can soak it in a glass cleaner within 15 minutes. Afterward, rinse it with clean water and wipe it with a soft cloth.
How Often Should You Clean?
We know how to clean your stainless steel straps, but how often should we do it? Ideally, once a month is enough. This is especially true if you are using it every day. Meanwhile, you can do a quick clean daily.
You can apply a stainless steel polish to preserve its beauty. You are free to do it either every other month or once weak. It is also recommended to bring your entire watch to a professional. They are also offering watches as a whole cleaning.
Additional Tips for Taking Care Stainless Steel Straps
Here are some more tips to protect your stainless steel straps. Following such things will extend its lifespan and make its beauty last longer.
- Do you always wear your watch? If not, it is better to put it inside its bag or box.
- How do you clean your stainless steel straps? It is better if you remove it from your watch for easier cleaning. This way, you will also have the chance to clean every part of it without fear of damaging your watch.
- Do you expose it to dirty water or seawater? Even though stainless steel is water resistant, it does not mean that salts in seawater will not damage your strap’s surface. If you want to maintain its texture, do not expose it to dust and salts.
Colors issue
Like other straps, stainless steel ones are also available in various colors. Indeed, it can always be a part of the customization process.
Color options could be limitless. For instance, choices are not only limited to black, gold, rose gold, blue, champagne, and others. All you must do is be clear about the color you want. In most cases, black, gold, and rose gold are available because they are normal colors. Nevertheless, you can still request special colors, but remember that they might not be available immediately or the color will not be the exact same on the next order, because the special color’s painting oil is hard to adjust.
Sometimes, you may need to compromise, especially if you request rare colors. Things cannot be avoided sometimes, and the availability of materials may vary from the manufacturer’s supplies. In cases like that, you may consider accepting available colors and re-order once other colors are ready.
